"The Rich" Original Painting 1/1

Acrylic on canvas. 24 x 24 inches.

There are so many untold stories in Richmond, California.

Full bestseller list-worthy novels suppressed within impossible constraints.
Gems in given and unwanted boxes.
Rich in spirit.
Surrounded by refinery smog, as many Black neighborhoods are.
There is also steady love and brilliance there.
Families that nurture and share the load.
And Grandfathers and “Grandpa’s babies” who remain that, well into adulthood even when the reigns trade hands.

If you know me, you know this is personal.
I waffled between calling this “Grandpa’s Detail” (as in security) and “The Rich”. I think the latter is more fitting because my experience in this city was so complex and.. rich. I also know many may have similar rich upbringings, but they may be from East St. Louis, South LA, Collier Heights or (insert polluted Black neighborhood here).

So here’s my love letter to Richmond, California and my Grandfather.
